Jaco is generally safe for international tourists, but standard safety precautions are necessary. Petty theft, opportunistic snatching, and vehicle break-ins are the most common issues. Avoid leaving bags unattended on the beach or personal items visible inside parked cars. Walking on unlit streets or along the beach after dark is not recommended. Ocean safety is also critical, as Jaco Beach is known for strong rip currents. Swimmers should pay attention to local warning flags and swim near active lifeguard posts when available. Visible Jewish attire such as a kippah is generally tolerated, though discretion in busy nightspots is always prudent.
